SYNOPSIS

Ticketyboo: a Secret in Plain Sight is an artistic feature documentary exploring the deeply personal struggle of staying connected to a loved one with dementia. It’s a social impact film empowering us with ways to demystify the disease when a dementia diagnosis lands in a family like a hand grenade. From crippling grief and regret over the sudden death of her father, Renée finds hope with an enlightened counselor who sets her on a path to redemption with two specific goals. What she doesn’t anticipate is discovering shocking truths about herself. Alzheimer’s didn’t destroy her relationship with her dad. She did. Her own fear and ignorance of the disease makes her the poster child for doing dementia badly. She confronts her fear by undergoing a series of tests to determine if she will develop the disease that killed her father. Fiercely independent and rebellious, she dares to glimpse into the crystal ball of her DNA and learns it could determine every aspect of her later life. At the same time, the Royal Commission into Aged Care exposes horror stories of abuse and neglect of people living with dementia. Haunted by the revelations Renée seeks out quality dementia care – if it exists. Along the way, she meets a professor working on an Alzheimer’s vaccine, experts with grim predictions and an outspoken activist fighting for dementia to be recognized as an international human rights issue. On a deeper level, Ticketyboo provokes reflection and conversation about how we value the elderly and regard the ageing process in ourselves
